I am renovating an old school into a house, I’m just after some tips and advice on some inexpensive yet effective ways to renovate. Basically I’m building a new house apart from the roof and the floor, all new structure, electrical and plumbing etc.

well then if DIY is out of the mix, then the second best way is, get a subscription to Angies list if you plan on using all contractors and categorize what you want to do by what can be accomplished in each season (if you forsee it taking longer than a couple of months). Than get rolling. I really would suggest DIY as a lot of it can be intimidating, but the end product and skills you will learn far outweigh the learning curve

I want to put the p trap in the basement, away from the sinks, tubs, washmachines, ect. because of room. thanks.

Well This would be a code issue but I can say this
The ptrap should be under the sink to prevent the gases from comein back up but I dont get your question totaly.
Lets say you have a sink down stairs and you run a 90 off the tail pc of the drain and run about 5ft of pipe then install a trap You could get away with this and not harm yourself, But there are other things to consider like where the vent line is. If you like you could E-mail me at kos101@yahoo and tell me what you are trying to do and where the sink is and so on and I will tell you what you could do by code. There are alot of things you can do that most people dont know about. Like the vent system.
If you have walked into a house in the kitchen and there is a island with a sink there is a vent on that drian under the sink. it looks like a upside U. But in cases you can legaly put a p-trap away from a wet fixture within guidelines.

I am having plumbing problems?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

When I wash clothes my toliet over flows and I am not sure what I can do. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Sounds like you have an obstruction in the main drain line. The washer is putting out more water than can flow down the pipe. Have the sewer line "snaked" by a plumber or rent one from a hardware store. If this doesn't do it, there is a possibility the vent pipe is too small, but that's a million to one shot. Hope this helps.

my hubby started plumbing at the age of 18 (now 26) in residential. he can do practically anything when it comes to plumbing a new house. im really not sure what everything is called so excuse my lack of knowlege here. but i know he can do inside and outside work for the houses. now with the industry the way it is…he has moved on to commercial industrial plumbing and has been in this field for a few years. i couldnt tell you exactly what all he knows but he is very good at what he does i know (ive heard ppl compliment him) and is a very hard and dedicated worker. he is plumbing HUGE jobs alone (example…petsmarts, hotels, apartment buildings, ect). he is doing undergrounds and using equipment. he is working for a man (basically sub contracting but getting paid weekly for the jobs). this is the only man he is working for and he keeps him very busy since my hubby is the only one who subs thru him. he doesnt even have a helper (well on certain days my bro helps but not everyday). again im not sure what all he can do but i know he is doing these jobs alone…dealing with the inspectors, laying out the jobs alone..basically running the show. everything but finding the jobs. HE DOES NOT have any kind of a licence tho. the man who runs the company is the one pulling permits ect. right now we are working on him going to school to get a licence but the thing is…we cannot afford school!!! i think he is underpaid for everything he does. he gets a regular pay of 650.00 per week (not by the job as a normal sub would get). he is also not on salary so days when he has to come home early for things that didnt work out right he loses pay. we also pay for the gas in the van he uses (i know he subs and we are responsible for that but this is ran a bit differently…kinda like an employee). the company provided the van. the way gas is we are definately using a 100 weekly in gas if not more. so basically 550 weekly he is paid. also taxes are not taken out. any thoughts or advice would be great. i think he is underpaid but what do you think? could he go to a company as a regular employee and make more? again he can do it all and if he doesnt know he is a quick learner. outside/inside/escavating ect on commercial and residential he can do. thanks

sorry so long

check job post on newspapers which qualified your hubby or you can post flyers in your area offering this kind of services. :)

No way! I can do it and I am a girl.
Cut off the water
Turn it off at the wall behind the toilet
Flush a few times
Unscrew it from the hoses and screws at the base.
Carefully pick it up and sit aside
Scrap the old one off the floor and base
Put the new one in place on the floor following instructions on the box.
Carefully position the base in place
Reattach screws and everything else
Turn the water back on !
TaDa!

I think my water heater is going out. What should I do?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

Lately, the amount of hot water for our morning shower has been lasting less and less time. It's gotten to the point where we get one good hot shower out of it. After that, it goes lukewarm for a little while, and then just cold. I'm pretty sure our water heater is going out. What should I do? Should I get it inspected by a local plumber? Does that cost anything? Is there something I can do myself to make sure it's bad before going out and completely replacing it?

If it's an electric heater, the heating elements are replaceable. If you have the owner's manual, it might have directions for replacing them. If not, call the plumber/electrician

If it is a gas heater, call the gas company to have them check it out.

UK Only!! How much would a plumber charge?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

What does a plumber charge for a refit of a small bathroom..i.e Take old one out and put in new? No tiling or anything else.
Im thinking of doing myself so if i can save a few quid..thats a motivation in its self!!!! Id appreciate sensible answers please.
As you can see from the USA answers i only want UK answers..of course i can get a quote but it doesnt harm to ask on here does it?

Good honest plumber about £125 a day.
Others will just rip you off.
You would save a lot more money if you had a go at the whole job.
Its not rocket science, how do you think the guy who will charge you £50 an hour learnt?

A plumber? Are they part of the evil elite that must be punished or are they hard working Americans who provide a valuable service that people want and need?

Does this sound like wealth redistribution?

Is this the socialist tone an Obama Presidency will take?

I saw that…redistribution of wealth is scary. The Robin Hood politics makes me mad. I want to keep what I make and I don’t want any money at the expense of others either.

Is a plumber's torch a good tool to bend acrylic?

Posted by admin On October - 31 - 2008

I'm going to lasercut a piece of acrylic in a star-petal shape and then bend the petals up to form a flower. What is the best tool to form the acrylic into a natural flower shape?
The oven doesn't work because I can't bend the piece fast enough before it cools and if i put it back in to reheat, it will revert back to a flat sheet.
I tried a heat gun but its a little slow and doesn't heat well. Sometimes I crack the acrylic.
Can I use a plumber's torch to do this? Will it burn the acrylic?
Can I just put the torch in a vice and leave it on continously while I heat and bend the acrylic at local points until im done?

the torch is going to cause bubbles in the acrylic. there is a tool put out by metabo it is a heat gun but operates at a higher heat level. i hope this was helpful.

Who cares! This is old news and not benefiting anyone or any party.
