Posted by admin On January - 3 - 2009

At one time or another, a homeowner will require the assistance of a plumber to help in an unplanned crisis or to help during the construction process. Typically, a professional can assist a homeowner with a variety of ways, including the snaking of clogged pipes, toilet backups, running cold and hot water supplies to the bathroom or kitchen and installing central heating or gas/oil supply systems.

The house does not have a dishwasher, so I was planning on having a general contractor come and install one for me. I know they'll have to cut out my cabinets and most likely install additional plumbing and electric. Do you know how much this will cost me?

Lot of imformation is missing.

But I would say 4 hours labor at what ever your local rates are plus travel time.

Is there a local electrical box the washer can be tapped into?
Do you have a garbage disposal? Waste water returns two different ways depends if you have this or not.

Are your pipes copper? plastic? gray stuff from the 80's (if so the cost just when up - splicing / banding tools needed)

Cutting out the woodwork is about an hour to make it neat and clean. Electrics can be easy or they may need to run a new circuit breaker from the box if you are maxed out. Plumbing is plumbing it takes what ever time it takes.

Request they wrap the dishwasher with baffling and duct tape it tight - this realy reduces the sound from the washer. Been there and did that.

Britain’s got Talent (2008)

ANDREW THE SINGING PLUMBER!
24 year-old from Glasgow singing “Paolo Nutini”

By the time Andrew Muir walked onstage to audition, the judges’ hopes of finding Britain’s next superstar in Glasgow had all but run out.

A plumber by trade, Andrew has always loved singing and dreams of the day he can swap his plunger for a microphone, and become a professional singer.

“I live in a small village and everybody calls me the Singing Plumber!” admitted the 24-year old from West Lothian. “The guys I work with are always telling me to shut up!”

Well the audience and the judges were a lot more appreciative of Andrew’s talents, much to his obvious relief.

He cut a nervous figure stood in front of the 2,000-strong audience. But as soon he put the mic to his lips and began to sing, it was as if all his worries washed away, and he lost himself in the performance.

Singing Paulo Nutini’s Rewind, it wasn’t long before the whole auditorium were swaying from side to side and singing along to all the words.

When he had finished the crowd were on their feet and the judges’ had big smiles on their faces.

Amanda recognised that all too familiar “likeability factor” in Andrew and called him a modest person with a huge talent.

Picking up on all the wolf-whistles Andrew was receiving, Piers joked: “A lot of women in this audience have just developed urgent plumbing problems!”

The highest praise of all came from Simon who claimed Andrew’s performance had made coming to Scotland worthwhile: “You walked on with zero confidence and almost zero personality” he said: “But, your confidence grew, it was fantastic to watch. ”

Having booked himself in the semis, the Singing Plumber will be hoping to turn his pipe dream into a reality.

Tax & Renting Out Previous Residence Property

Posted by admin On December - 30 - 2008

I recently got married and live with my wife in a property owned by her. I still own another property myself which I had lived in for 10 years before moving in with her, and have been renting it out for the last few months. I have paid off the mortgage on my property, but we currently have one running on my wife’s (our current home). The term on this is about to expire so I believe it will be tax efficient to remortgage my rented property instead and pay off our current mortgage, thereby enabling me to claim tax relief on mortgage interest. My salary (ie not including rental income) alone will certainly be enough to cover this mortage.

- Do I have to take out a buy-to-let mortgage on my property, or will a standard residencial one suffice? (a mortgage broker i spoke to said a residencial mortgage would be fine as i will not need to the rent to cover payments, but i’m not convinced this is right)
- Can I claim tax relief on the full mortgage amount, or just up to the original purchase price? (it is worth a lot more now than when i bought it)
- Is there anything better I could do from a tax saving perspective? (My wife is in a lower tax band than me)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Chlorine Water Filter - Is That All You Need?

Posted by admin On December - 30 - 2008

You know that you need a chlorine water filter, because you can taste it and smell it. But, if a facility uses chloramines to disinfect (or any other method of disinfection) there are other chemicals in your tap water that you cannot see, smell or taste. In addition, public disinfection methods are fairly effective, but there are some microbes that are resistant to them. So, here’s what you should actually be looking for.

what is the national plumbing code?

Posted by admin On December - 30 - 2008

my dad is a contractor and he asked me to google the national plumbing code but the ones ive come up with are for canada….is there a seperate one for america and what are the links where you can look it up?

thanks

There is a US plumbing code, it is the Uniform Plumbing Code, there is also an International Plumbing Code used by many municipalities.
An electrical, the National Electrical Code
A building, etc.

There is no link to the entire code online because they make people buy the code books, however, you can look for the plumbing code specific to what your dad needs, like "Plumbing code for sink vent". Or, add to your question you have just posted with the issues he needs answers for, there are people with the code book or who already know the right answer(s).

You can try this:
http://www.codecheck.com/
But I do not think it will help alot.

A framer cut a plumbing line in a house and filed a claim with his insurance along with the General contractor's claim for the same incident. The GC is now holding payment from the subcontractor because nobody's insurance wants to pay.

Key word in this question is "contract". All claims for any damages done should be contained in the contract between the GC and the sub. The Sub cannot claim both. This is insurance fraud. The GC should take care of the damage and back-charge the sub.
