I had a plumber at my home to perform some minor plumbing work. He warned me that I would have a plumbing problem in the future and that the City would be at fault. I am prepared to call the City, but I have no clue of whom to ask for.
Sorry if this seems like a silly question…I am a first time homeowner.
Thanks!

Where can I find info on plumbing problems?

Posted by admin On December - 14 - 2008

Specifically, my bathtub is leaking into my laundry room, which is underneath the bathroom. Serious answers only, please, and thanks for the help.

1. you could call a plumber, there are services online to help you find one (like servicemagic)

2. you could ask at local plumbing shop or super store (good luck,) but you would essentially be trying to find someone to do the needed repair.

3. you could search online particularly in forums like this one where a knowledgeable person may ask questions to help identify the problem. (However they will not be able to fix it for you unless you happen to be nearby [unlikely])

It is possible that you don't need a plumber. The last several times I repaired a leak it was due to usage or maintenance issues around the tub.

For general information, if the leak is not under the drain area of the tub look for leaks through tiles. If the leak is constant regardless of use it is likely a leak in the supply pipes, hot or cold. If the leak occures during use on only some people or at some times and not others, look for someone who is leaving a curtain out or a door open. If the leak occures only when a shower is being used but not the tub look for a leak in the supply tube to the shower head or through poorly grouted tiles. If the leak occures during any use it may be caulking or something in the drain lines. If you fill up the tub and it is not leaking but begins to leak when you let the water out it is likely a problem with the drains. If the full or draining tub does not leak but begins to leak when the tub is very full look for leaks around the overflow.

To be sure to see when the leaks are happening instead of being delayed you may have to open up the ceiling of the laundry. If the leaks have been bad you will have to repair or replace the ceiling anyway.

Repairs to the drains are often done from a trap door in another room bordering the valve set of the tub or from below by cutting a hole in your laundry room. Repairs to the supply side of the system are most often done through the wall of the adjoining room to avoid disturbing the tiles/surround around the tub.

Former FBI Agent Mark Rossini pleaded guilty Monday for doing what Helen Jones-Kelley did – using a government database for a private purpose. Not only did Rossini lose his job, he faces five years in prison. Jones-Kelley received a 30-day suspension, and will return to her $140,000-a-year job directing Gov. Ted Strickland’s largest agency later this month. Jones-Kelley was disciplined for ordering her subordinates to snoop in government databases for damning information on “Joe the Plumber,”

When I flush the toilet, the water rises but doesn't drain. I don't have a plunger or a snake and am in the process of acquiring one but there are air bubbles rise every once in a while. My in-sink-errator (sp?) is also making gurgling noises. A. What does that mean? B. How could they be related? C. I dumped some of the toilet water into the tub and it drained there. If the toilet plunging/snaking works then it was obviously clogged. If not and the sink continues, should I call maintenance? and/or tell them of both? (I don't want to get charged for a complicated service request) D. Is showering OK? I've tried googling and whatnot but I'm a novice when it coming to nonfunctional plumbing =(

The lines are all interconnected through the piping. If one is plugged it will force air out another line so, that's where the bubbles are coming from.
Plunger the toilet, it sounds like it's plugged. This should take care of it, if not, call the management for a plumber and eat the cost.

Plumbing through History

Plumbing through History Posted by: admin in Education Plumbing is known to have started with the Indu Valley Civilizations by 2700 B.C; they developed a system of standardized earthware plumbing pipes with broad flanges making use of asphalt to prevent leakages. Others defend the theory that Plumbing originated during the ancient civilizations such as Greek, Roman, Persian and Chinese, these civilizations developed the public baths and needed to provide potable water, and drainage of wast

I am buying an old house and want to make sure that I can afford an old house’s problems. I think of hiring an inspector. I just wonder how they can tell the problems with wiring or plumbing when the house is vacant and all the utilities are being turned off.

I would definitely recommend a house inspection, even if you know a fair amount about houses. Nobody finds everything and it’s always good to have a second pair of eyes on the case. Some problems are obvious, though, such as these inspection gems:

There are limits to what an inspector can check if the utilities are not on. For example, he won’t be able to determine water pressure or be able to notice active leaks (though he can certainly detect signs of leakage, such as stained wood). He can’t tell if lights and light switches are working.
