How To Get A Good Plumber

I'm trying to replace the washer in my tap but the hexagonal nut is worn. How can I remove the stem?

The tap is constantly running and I've had to turn it off under the sink but it's still dripping as I can't turn it off all the way and water is running down under the sink along the pipes - help!

you need one of the following tools :-stilsons/footprintsor mole grips
Turn off water to the tap hold the tap so it cant move then try to undo it anti clockwise if its still to hard try heating it up with a piece of rag round the nut and pour hot water on the rag then try again after a few minutes if this fails it could mean replacing the tap

i have bought some taps and was planning on doing it myself but have started to chicken out as i'm worried i'll cock it up

Try doing it yourself. As long as the taps are ones that fit when you turn off the water at the mains you can take as long as you like. If you fail you can always pop back the old ones. Check where you baught the taps that they are the right ones. Some barrels are different sizes. Basin taps are different from bath ones. Don't forget to get taps that are easy to change the washers. Some plumber used taps that I couldn't change and I had to buy a new set. Actually I had a plumber come to the house for another job and asked him to change the washers and he said he couldn't without ruining the taps!

i was recently made redundent and am looking to retrain as a plumber looked at colleges but courses last years part time so looked at some private training centres (ie. reactfast.co.uk )offering 6 weeks of training but am unsure if i will get right city and guilds quaifications to get work these courses cost £4000 +vat money i cant afford to waste

Check with your local Citizens Advise Bereau they should give you some help and names of local areas where you can train. 4000 is too much you should be able to get something far much cheaper than that. Also look at other alternatives as well for example motor mechanics and building. There are some government sponsored colleges around. City and Guilds is the qualification you need.

hi all. ok so basically i am nearing the end of my city & giulds level 2 in plumbing. at last. problem is that i have had very little work experience. i have been working with a plumber voluntarily 2 days a week for about 2 months in which time i have learnt alot of stuff. sadly his workload has dried up and im back to where i left off, im looking for anyone who would be willing to offer me some voluntary work experience for 1-2 days a week even weekends. i live in the sk23 area but have my own transport and can travel to manchester areas etc. i am 22years old and am capable of most plumbing tasks i.e soldering, bending, upvc pushfit etc just need more experience. i would be greatful for anyones advice on how they did it or if anyone out there is willing to offer some experience please contact me. many thanks.

I bought a similar in B&Q last year and is easy to install, left pipe Connect to hot water, right to cold, is a “thermostatic mixer”, the left tap enable cold and hot water come in to the mixer and the right tap is to graduate the temperature and the red button is to fix it, very good mixer.
