Water pipe “knock” when taps are turned on?

Posted by admin On January - 14 - 2009

I had a plumber in to service my instant water heater and since then the pipes produce a “knocking” sound when the taps are used (hot & cold), I do not want to call him back, he was a nightmare of a worker, can anyone suggest a cure for my problem. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for everyones answers so far, I am going through all your suggestions, let you know when I find the right "cure".

I suggest you turn down the water pressure at the main stop tap and check if it stops.

It’s just air bubbles in the lines. You can have a plumber come by and bleed them for you or you can just wait until they clear out on their own.

There is an air hammer type valve that would probably be needed. Call another bbb type plumber next time!

I used to live in a flat and the council fitted a combi boiler to the persons flat above me. The only problem was when i turn my cold water tap on then off it would make his pipes bang. So when i was on mornings and started at 6am i would turn the tap on and off a couple of times and you should have heard the noise it made. Lets just say he didn’t need a alarm clock.

you do not get air in mains water supply, possible causes loose pipework worn tap and ball valve washers,or the unit itself has not been serviced properly. this can be a plumbers nightmare to find, called water hammer in the trade

Water hammer is your problem, caused by loose pipes, or turning of the taps to quick. Have a look at billy bodgers work and see if he has left any pipes uncliped.. Quarter turn taps are a problem in older houses cos they shut the water of to quickly and cause shock waves to flow through pipes giving you the banging noise.. A temp fix can be as simple as turning down the main stop tap a little to reduce flow of water through pipes
