Here’s a transcript of the third presidential debate from 15 Oct 2008, in which McCain gave Joe the Plumber his fifteen minutes of fame (or fifteen megs, whichever comes first) as a potential victim of Obama’s proposed tax plan:

Here’s a study supporting the claim that Germany and some Scandinavian countries have more “upward mobility” (people moving from working class to middle, or middle class to upper in one generation) in recent decades than USA or the UK:

LOL, and the gm dealerships might not even get that much right now. (Might not deserve that much right now!)

yup, that’s it.
of course with almost anything there are rule breakers. if a business is sought after, they can ask ridiculous numbers.
personally, i wouldn’t sell a business at 1.5 times annual unless i was ready to retire (such is the case often). right now there may be a few gm dealerships selling at lower than that.

That’s what I was looking for. I figured there was some kind of standard rule of thumb. Like a friend who took restaurant management courses told me that restaurants try to keep food costs at lower than 15% to 25%. They don’t get enough profit if their costs go higher than that.

great video!
businesses do commonly sell for 1.5 to 3 times annual gross. so, if a plumbing contractor sold his business for $250k, it may be based on last year’s gross of little more than $165k (keeping in mind that $165k may have only included $50k in profit for the owner).
if there was $250k profit, the business may be selling for more like $650-750k. otherwise, like you had mentioned, how stupid would you have to be to sell it?
good job, gave you all five man!

Any person with a ” …
Any person with a “small business” who has a salary of $250k per year is running a large ing business. I don’t care how many multinationals or multibillion dollar companies you compare it with, a business that provides a salary of $250k per year to any employees or owner is by no means small, and we should not feel sad for their taxes getting increased no matter if they’ve been featured on “Dirty Jobs”.

You know, it occurs …
You know, it occurs to me while I’m listening to Democracy Now that “small business” is another one of those vague terms thrown around with as much spin as “middle class.” McCain infamously joked that the cutoff for middle class is $5million. I can’t remember if it was “middle class” or “working folks” that Palin said she and her husband and family have always been members of. With a plane, couple snowmobiles, multiple cars and $500k house– Sorry, that’s above middle or “working” class.

I mean, it could be …
I mean, it could be a business that has $1,250,000 income with $1million expenses, or it could be a business that just barely breaks even after the owner takes out $250k salary. Either way, the business doesn’t need to go broke just because the owner’s salary might get taxed higher.

Hi aliveformyself. …
Hi aliveformyself. From what I’ve read, Joe Wurzelbacher works with his boss, so the business is two people. They operate out of his garage or something. So I’m not sure what the average small plumbing shop earns, but I doubt $250k salary is accurate for the one “Joe” wants to buy. And there’s no job too gritty or working class to make me think that a person making $250k from it can’t stand to have his taxes increased. The business expenses are not reflected in the $250k salary either way.

$1,500 a year more in taxes is money ahead for me - if I wasn’t having to pay the additional $2,600 for gas it’s cost me this year with the Texas-Taliban in power.

I think Joe the Plumber is the stooge of a desperate campaign. They should do backround checks at the McCain headquarters but old-John can’t manage the internets.
The financial advisor who said there was nothing wrong with the economy and called us whiners.
The VP who can’t do a press conference or name a media source - with a scandal, a pregnant teen, and a successionist husband.
Only McCain would find an unlicenced plumber who makes $40k a year and hasn’t paid all his taxes.
